Crafting a Social Impact Investing Strategy with The Robertson Trust
The Robertson Trust (TRT), Scotland's largest independent grant-making trust, sought to utilise its endowment for social and environmental impact through a robust Social Impact Investing agenda.
Maximising the Impact of The Robertson Trust’s Endowment:
The Trust aimed to create a strategy that echoed their mission and values while enabling the allocation of a carve-out from their endowment. We partnered closely with The Robertson Trust, their board, charity partners, and social investors to develop a cohesive strategy.
A Collaborative Strategy Development:
The process was divided into two stages:
STAGE 1
Discover, Design, and Develop
We held internal and external discussions to understand and shape Social and Impact Investing ambitions and priorities.
We analysed previous examples of social and impact investments and designed a framework for future impact and financial returns.
STAGE 2
Strategy Formation and Implementation
We formulated a comprehensive Social and Impact Investing strategy, including a two-year action plan.
We helped establish a governance structure and identified potential initial investment opportunities.
The Outcome:
The TRT Board approved the Social and Impact Investing strategy, paving the way for up to £20m of social and impact investments. The new strategy empowers TRT to generate meaningful and lasting social and environmental impacts, and the formation of the Social Impact Investing Committee ensures proper oversight.
